I collaborated with 560zoom, a collective based in Casablanca, to imagine the experience of endangered red algae species in El Jadida, Morocco. This has been exhibited at Onca Gallery, P21 Gallery, and Mahal Art Space
As humans we often think about species in relation to them, but what would happen if the algae could tell its own story? Its existence is threated due to demand from the Global North where it's used in pharmaceuticals, the food industry and fabrics, yet it's been on the shores of Al Jadida for millions of years. Inspired by oral storytelling and archives, we attempt to listen to and convey this experience, beyond the realm of human time and understanding.
This was made as part of a 5 month long residency withA.MAL collective during which me and 5 other artists explored sustainability relations between the Global North and South, using Agar algae as a starting point.
